We also went to a tropical fruit farm. This was way up on a mountain (the roads were very curvy – lots of switchbacks) and was a large tropical fruit orchard. They had it set up for educational tours around the orchard. We paid RM 45 (about $15US) each for the tour and a fruit tasting buffet. They had many varieties of trees in a central area so that they could go around from one type to another easily with those on the tour. It was very interesting to see all the different fruit – especially ones that we were not familiar with.
The fruit tasting was amazing!! They set out many different types of fruit for us to sample. Some were so good and others not so much! My favourite was mango and John’s was the watermelon – I suppose our fruit tastes are not too exotic! I did not like the dragonfruit and the durian was not so good. Apparently durian is an acquired taste!! The fruit is very smelly and the taste is not much better. I think the best way to describe the taste is to say it is like a very sweet garlic/onion flavour. Not very tasty and actually something that is difficult to get your brain around – it tastes like nothing else I have ever tasted and I am in no hurry to eat it again! There are some people who love the stuff and will travel great distances just to buy it. There are also many hotels that are said to be “durian-free” to keep the smell out! Apparently once the scent is there it is difficult to remove.
