Downtown Penang (Georgetown)

On June 29th we went to the downtown area of Penang (or Georgetown).  Once we were there we spent the day exploring and seeing all sorts of interesting things.  We went to the Penang Museum which was very nice.  We took the free bus around town and saw a lot of the city.  Once we had done one trip around town we hopped off the bus in Chinatown and began to explore.  We stopped at Sam’s Batik and looked over all the amazing things there.  John bought a nice top for RM 50 (almost $17US).  We also wandered through several malls – it was interesting to see these – some areas looked very much like a North American mall while other areas looked very different.  Chinatown itself was very interesting!  There were all sorts of things to see and many shops were small stall type stores.  We wandered up and down the streets.  We had a nice supper – I had the special fried rice – it came with chicken and two prawns (the prawns had to have the shells removed).  John had something called Kung Fu Noodles.  I think I chose the better meal!!  For dessert we had something called “Cendol” – it is a dish of shaved ice, with some sugary syrup added on to it, and then some kidney beans (we did not have that on ours) and some things that looked like green gummy worms – I do not know what these were!!  Then they pour some milk over it all.  Most definately an unusual dish!!

To keep this to a reasonable length post I am going to post pictures of monumwents and stuff in one post and Chinatown in another (otherwise I'll have way too many pictures for one post!!
